Marietta Chudakova

Marietta Chudakova (1937-2021) was a chair of the Bulgakov Foundation in Moscow. From 1965 to 1984, Chudakova was working in Manuscripts Dept. of USSR State Library, she took active part in acquisition of writer’s personal archive from Bulgakov’s widow Yelena, who saved his unpublished works from oblivion and published them after his death in 1940.
Marietta Chudakova was a literary theorist, critic, and writer. A highly respected authority on Russian literature, she was a professor of the Gorky Literary Institute in Moscow for many years, and has been a visiting professor at the University of South Carolina, Stanford University, and École Normale Supérieure, among others. She was a member of the Moscow Writer’s Union and the European Academy. Chudakova has published more than 200 works on twentieth-century Russian literature, including works on Bulgakov, Zoshchenko, and Tynianov.
